This is a genuine US Army surplus Modular Sleep System (MSS), made in the USA by Tennier Industries. Each sleeping bag system contains 4 components, described in detail below: the patrol sleeping, the intermediate cold weather sleeping bag, the bivy cover, and compression stuff sack. The sleeping bags can be used independently or snapped together into the sleep system, providing comfortable year-round sleeping conditions. Snaps hold the sleeping bags and bivy cover in place, so they will not move or slide around on you when you're trying to get in or out. Together, the sleep system is rated down to -30° F or -40° F.

We receive these items in bulk from the military and most are in great condition, with some appearing to be like new.  Use the quality guide below to see descriptions of each condition available.  The pictures featured here are stock photos and not of the actual item you will receive, but the actual item is of similar condition and quality. The dimensions of the different components are listed below, and should be considered rough estimations.

Quality Guide

  • Like New - A sleeping bag that appears flawless and never issued or used.  We receive these items in bulk from the military so we cannot say for sure whether or not they are brand new.
  • Excellent - The bivy covers will be crisp and appear to be in the "like new" condition.  The other sleeping bags will be in "very good" condition as described below.
  • Very Good - A sleeping bag that shows very minor signs of use but is in great condition.  No holes, rips, or tears in any of the components.  All zippers, snaps, and drawstrings will function normally.
  • Acceptable - A sleeping bag that will show signs of moderate to heavy use.  Any defects will not hinder the sleeping bag's intended use and would be easy for someone to repair.  There may be one or more small holes in the fabric (most are pin-holes but some may be larger, up to approximately the size of a dime).  All zippers, snaps, and drawstrings will function normally.

Included Components

Patrol Sleeping Bag - This OD green mummy-style sleeping bag is rated for temperatures down to 30° F. It features an oversized zipper for easy opening and closing, and snaps for connecting to the other sleep system components. It also features a draft flap over the zipper to prevent heat loss, as well as a drawstring cord around around the hood to seal in even more heat.

Exterior Dimensions, when laid flat:

  • Length: 81"
  • Width, at feet: 20"
  • Width, at shoulders: 34"

Intermediate Cold Weather Sleeping Bag - This black mummy-style sleeping bag is rated for temperatures down to -10° F. It features an oversized zipper for easy opening and closing, and snaps for connecting to the other sleep system components. It also features a draft flap over the zipper to prevent heat loss, as well as a drawstring cord around the hood to seal in even more heat.

Exterior Dimensions, when laid flat:

  • Length: 81"
  • Width, at feet: 18"
  • Width, at shoulders: 33"

Bivy Cover - The bivy cover is tan on the bottom and has a woodland camouflage pattern on the top. It is made with a 3-layer GORE-TEX fabric, making it fully waterproof. It has a zippered closure with snaps for connecting to the other sleep system components. It also features Velcro fasteners around the hood which can be fastened to prevent openings during rainy or extremely cold weather.

Compression Stuff Sack - This black stuff sack has 6 nylon straps for compression. (Some variations of this stuff sack have 9 compression straps). All components of the sleep system will fit into this compression sack, and can be compressed down to 1 cubic foot.

My daughter told me if she had her own MSS...

Posted by Russ on Nov 26th 2018

My daughter told me if she had her own MSS she'd stop stealing mine, so I bought one for her from Thunderhead Outfitters that was in "Used, Acceptable" condition. Like mine, it's in terrific shape. It's obvious it has been used, but there are no holes/tears, and all the snaps and zippers work just fine. The price was right and shipping was quick.

Bought this bag in "very good" condition....

Posted by Lee on May 29th 2018

Bought this bag in "very good" condition. It was in near perfect condition. I would have expected this from "like new." Completely clean. I had a hard time finding any signs of use on any of the bags. The only way I could even tell it was not brand new was some fibers in the velcro. Extremely pleased with this bag and even more so with the condition. If I was really searching for something to complain about then it would be the packaging. The box it was shipped in was weak and had torn all down one edge. However, it still arrived in perfect condition and I have no complaints about it.

Ordered the MSS in "Like New" condition...

Posted by Ross on Mar 21st 2016

Ordered the MSS in "Like New" condition and it is just as advertised. Found some duct tape residue on the cold weather bag, but if this thing was ever issued it NEVER saw the field. Bivy bag is crisp, all snaps and zippers are in working order. Bags are free of dirt and debris, and all the stitching is in tact. But more importantly, nobody has written their initials on any of the tags! I was issued two of these and they weren't anywhere close to being in this kind of condition. Thought about ordering from one of the bigger websites and paying more for the bag, but I am very glad I didn't. Got the bag in the mail on the second business day after ordering, and I could not be more pleased with the quality. I will definitely be ordering more gear from Thunderhead Outfitters.
